Khong District Holds 30,000 Fish Release Ceremony to Promote Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation
Khong District organised a fish release ceremony on 16 July 2026 at Wat Phudin, Huay Village, Champasak Province, releasing 30,000 indigenous fish into natural waterways to promote aquatic biodiversity conservation and sustainable fisheries.
The event was held in conjunction with the 29th National Fish Release Day (13 July 1997 – 13 July 2026) and to commemorate the 116th birth anniversary of President Souphanouvong.
The ceremony was attended by Mr Souvanh Budsivongsak, Vice President of Khong District; Mr Sathit Patsaphan, Provincial Governor and Secretary of the District Executive Committee; representatives from the Champasak Provincial Department of Agriculture and Forestry; representatives of Don Sahong Electricity Company; district officials; local authorities; and residents of Huay Village.
During the event, Mr Bandit Sighatham, Head of the Office of Agriculture and Environment of Khong District, presented an overview of the district’s ongoing efforts to conserve and restore aquatic resources. He highlighted the establishment of 79 fish conservation zones (vangs) across 60 villages, covering a total area of approximately 301.91 hectares. He also reported on the district’s continued enforcement against illegal fishing activities, including the confiscation and destruction of prohibited fishing equipment and illegal wooden fish traps, alongside legal action taken against offenders.
As part of the conservation initiative, 30,000 indigenous fish (Pak fish species) were released into the waters surrounding Wat Phudin, a jointly managed conservation area shared by Huay and Phimanphon villages.
The ceremony also served as a platform to encourage government agencies, local authorities, military personnel, police officers and community members to strengthen cooperation in combating illegal fishing practices and raising public awareness of the importance of conserving aquatic resources for future generations.
This annual initiative reflects the shared commitment of government agencies, local communities and stakeholders to protecting freshwater ecosystems and promoting the sustainable management of fisheries in Khong District.
